Dutch conversation skill · original speaking practice
Agree and disagree in Dutch
Agreement is not only ja or nee. Signal how much you agree, name the exact point, give one reason and invite the other person to respond. Partial agreement often keeps a discussion more accurate than polite vagueness.
Build the interaction, not a memorized speech
Separate the proposal from the person. Dat voorstel lijkt me lastig focuses on the idea, while jij hebt ongelijk can make the exchange personal.
Use omdat for a direct reason and maar or aan de andere kant for a limit. If you reject a plan, offer a workable alternative so the conversation can reach a decision.
Six Dutch phrases with a clear function
Daar ben ik het helemaal mee eens.
I completely agree with that.
Ik ben het deels met je eens.
I partly agree with you.
Op dat punt denk ik er anders over.
On that point I think differently.
Dat klopt, maar we hebben weinig tijd.
That is true, but we have little time.
Ik kies liever voor optie twee, omdat…
I prefer option two because…
Hoe kijk jij naar dat nadeel?
How do you view that disadvantage?
Read each Dutch phrase once, cover the English meaning and adapt one detail. Then combine two phrases inside a complete turn so the listener hears both purpose and relevant information.
Original dialogue model
- Speaker A: Ik vind dat we de bijeenkomst online moeten houden.
- Speaker B: Ik ben het deels met je eens. Het bespaart reistijd.
- Speaker A: Welk nadeel zie je dan?
- Speaker B: Nieuwe deelnemers leren elkaar minder makkelijk kennen.
- Speaker A: Zullen we de eerste bijeenkomst op locatie doen?
- Speaker B: Dat lijkt me een goed compromis.
Do not memorize the dialogue. Mark what each turn does—open, clarify, react, propose or confirm—then replace the setting and details while preserving those functions.
Adapt the same skill from A2 to B2
A2
state agreement or disagreement and one simple reason.
B1
mark partial agreement and propose an alternative.
B2
acknowledge evidence, distinguish criteria and formulate a compromise.
Four mistakes that weaken this interaction
- Using ja maar before showing what you actually accept.
- Disagreeing with the person instead of the specific claim.
- Giving five reasons that do not lead to a choice.
- Rejecting an option without proposing a next step.
Four recording drills
- Round 1: Respond to five opinions with different degrees of agreement.
- Round 2: Turn a personal disagreement into a proposal-focused sentence.
- Round 3: Give one advantage, one limitation and one recommendation.
- Round 4: Record a one-minute discussion that ends with a decision or open question.
These structures support daily discussion and B1/B2 argumentation. They do not guarantee an exam score; the strength of an answer also depends on task fit, clarity and language control.
- The listener can identify my purpose within two sentences.
- I include the detail needed for a useful response.
- I react to the previous turn instead of delivering an unrelated script.
- My final turn requests, confirms or closes something clearly.
- I repeat once after naming one specific improvement.
Frequently asked questions
Should I memorize all six phrases?
No. Learn what each phrase does, then change the person, time, place, reason or requested action. Flexible retrieval matters more than reproducing this page.
Can I use this for an exam?
You can use the speaking method as supplementary practice. For current format, timing, scoring and official examples, use the responsible official exam organization.
Does the web page record my voice?
No. The public page displays material only. Use a local recorder, the iPhone app or a teacher workflow if you want to review audio.
