Dutch conversation skill · original speaking practice

Survival Dutch phrases

Survival phrases work when they include the detail needed for action. Say what you need, add a destination, amount, time or problem, and confirm the answer rather than memorizing a long generic phrase list.

Original lesson boundary: this page uses an independently written dialogue and phrase set. It is supplementary speaking practice, not an official exam task and not a copy of another course.

Build the interaction, not a memorized speech

Group phrases by task: locate, buy, travel, ask for help and check. Practise a complete two-turn exchange so you can recognize the answer as well as produce the question.

For urgent danger, contact the appropriate emergency service; a language lesson is not emergency guidance. For ordinary travel and service problems, keep the message short and concrete.

Six Dutch phrases with a clear function

01

Waar is het station?

Where is the station?

02

Eén kaartje naar Rotterdam, alstublieft.

One ticket to Rotterdam, please.

03

Kan ik hier met pin betalen?

Can I pay by card here?

04

Ik ben mijn tas kwijt.

I have lost my bag.

05

Kunt u mij hiermee helpen?

Could you help me with this?

06

Dus ik moet bij de volgende halte uitstappen?

So I should get off at the next stop?

Read each Dutch phrase once, cover the English meaning and adapt one detail. Then combine two phrases inside a complete turn so the listener hears both purpose and relevant information.

Original dialogue model

  1. Speaker A: Goedemiddag, één kaartje naar Delft, alstublieft.
  2. Speaker B: Enkele reis of retour?
  3. Speaker A: Een retour. Kan ik met pin betalen?
  4. Speaker B: Ja. De trein vertrekt over tien minuten van spoor vier.
  5. Speaker A: Dus spoor vier om tien over elf?
  6. Speaker B: Dat klopt.

Do not memorize the dialogue. Mark what each turn does—open, clarify, react, propose or confirm—then replace the setting and details while preserving those functions.

Adapt the same skill from A2 to B2

A2

state one need and confirm one practical detail.

B1

explain what went wrong and ask for two possible solutions.

B2

compare options involving time, cost or accessibility.

Four mistakes that weaken this interaction

  • Memorizing a question without preparing for likely answers.
  • Using hier or daar when the location is not visible to the listener.
  • Leaving out destination, quantity or time.
  • Treating an ordinary phrase list as emergency, legal or medical advice.

Four recording drills

  1. Round 1: Build a two-turn exchange for ticket, payment, direction and lost property.
  2. Round 2: Replace every vague place word with a visible landmark or address.
  3. Round 3: Repeat prices and times back in a different format.
  4. Round 4: Record one forty-second travel problem with request, detail and confirmation.

Carry the same functional structure into exam or daily tasks: need, concrete detail, requested action and confirmation. Change the city, time and object on every repetition so the language remains flexible.

  • The listener can identify my purpose within two sentences.
  • I include the detail needed for a useful response.
  • I react to the previous turn instead of delivering an unrelated script.
  • My final turn requests, confirms or closes something clearly.
  • I repeat once after naming one specific improvement.

Frequently asked questions

Should I memorize all six phrases?

No. Learn what each phrase does, then change the person, time, place, reason or requested action. Flexible retrieval matters more than reproducing this page.

Can I use this for an exam?

You can use the speaking method as supplementary practice. For current format, timing, scoring and official examples, use the responsible official exam organization.

Does the web page record my voice?

No. The public page displays material only. Use a local recorder, the iPhone app or a teacher workflow if you want to review audio.
