Dutch alphabet pronunciation
Dutch uses the same basic 26-letter Latin alphabet as English, but several letter names sound different. Learn the names in contrast groups and practise them inside real spelling tasks rather than reciting the alphabet only once.
How the sound pattern works
The most useful goal is successful spelling on the phone. Group letters that learners confuse, such as E–I, A–H, G–J and U–Q, and add a familiar example word when necessary.
IJ is important in Dutch writing but is not an extra basic alphabet letter in the 26-letter sequence. Speakers may call Y Griekse ij or i-grec to distinguish it from IJ.

Say the letter, then an example word: B van boek.
Put it inside a complete sentence
- Mijn achternaam schrijf je met een G en een R.
- De postcode begint met vier, twee, A, B.
- Kunt u de laatste drie letters herhalen?
- De Y noem ik Griekse ij om verwarring te voorkomen.
Listen once, copy slowly, alternate a contrast, then use the target in a complete sentence. Record only the final two rounds so comparison stays manageable.
Four mistakes to avoid
- Reciting English letter names while spelling Dutch information.
- Treating IJ and Y as interchangeable in every name.
- Saying a long code without grouping or confirmation.
- Repeating a misunderstood letter louder instead of adding an example word.
A four-round recording drill
- Round 1: Spell your first and last name at a steady pace.
- Round 2: Read a fictional postcode with two letters.
- Round 3: Practise G, J, U, Q, E and I as a contrast set.
- Round 4: Record a phone-style confirmation using letter plus example word.
- The target remains recognizable at normal sentence speed.
- The consonants before and after it are still complete.
- I changed one named feature in the second recording.
- I did not label ordinary regional variation as failure.
What variation is normal?
Example-word conventions differ across organizations, and speakers may use either Griekse ij or i-grec for Y. The practical test is whether the listener writes the intended letter.
Frequently asked questions
Should I practise only isolated sounds?
No. Isolated practice helps you find a position, but the acceptance test is a complete word and sentence at usable speed.
Do I need to remove my accent?
No. Prioritize contrasts, complete word shapes and rhythm that let the listener recognize your message. Accent reduction is optional.
Can automatic feedback replace a teacher?
No. It can direct attention and support repetition, but it may miss regional variation or diagnose the wrong physical cause.
