Dutch UI pronunciation

Dutch UI is a rounded front diphthong with no exact everyday English equivalent. Keep the tongue toward the front, round the lips, and glide without turning UI into English ow, Dutch OE or a plain UU.

How the sound pattern works

Begin from a rounded front position: the lips are rounded, but the tongue does not move to the back as it would for OE. Then make a controlled glide toward a closer position.

Do not learn UI from an English spelling trick alone. Approximation may help you start, but contrast practice is what keeps huis separate from hoes and uit separate from oud.

Mark the target in four useful words, practise two positions, then answer a short prompt. Judge whether the word remains recognizable, not whether your accent disappears.

Four mistakes to avoid

• Starting too far back and producing an OU-like sound.
• Holding one steady UU instead of making a small glide.
• Spreading the lips as if UI were an English unrounded vowel.
• Producing UI correctly alone but losing it when the sentence speeds up.

A four-round recording drill

1. Round 1: Alternate huis and hoes six times, then use huis in a sentence.
2. Round 2: Record uit, buiten and vanuit huis as one growing sequence.
3. Round 3: Circle every UI in a short answer and check only those words.
4. Round 4: Repeat at normal pace without exaggerating the lip movement.

What variation is normal?

Speakers differ in how open or how long the first part sounds. Preserve the contrast with OE and OU and prioritize a stable word over an exaggerated textbook gesture.

Should I practise only isolated sounds?

No. Isolated practice helps you find a position, but the acceptance test is a complete word and sentence at usable speed.

Do I need to remove my accent?

No. Prioritize contrasts, complete word shapes and rhythm that let the listener recognize your message. Accent reduction is optional.

Can automatic feedback replace a teacher?

No. It can direct attention and support repetition, but it may miss regional variation or diagnose the wrong physical cause.
