Dutch present tense for speaking

The Dutch present tense covers what happens now, repeated habits and many scheduled or future events. Build retrieval around the verb stem, then attach the subject pattern you need instead of reciting a full table before speaking.

Use the rule while building a message

With ik, use the stem: ik werk. With jij or je after the verb, the t often disappears: werk jij? For hij, zij, u and a noun subject, use the stem plus t in regular patterns.

For plural subjects, use the infinitive: wij werken. High-frequency irregular forms such as ben, bent, is, heb and heeft need separate practice.

Grammar helps only when it preserves who did what, when it happened and what response is needed. Say the shortest accurate version first. Add detail after the core pattern is stable, and do not restart a complete message for a harmless accent or article variation.

Read each sentence once, cover the translation and change the actor, time or place. Then answer a real question with the pattern instead of reciting the isolated example.

  1. Speaker A: Waar werk je?
  2. Speaker B: Ik werk in een ziekenhuis.
  3. Speaker A: Begin je vroeg?
  4. Speaker B: Ja, mijn dienst begint om zeven uur.
  5. Speaker A: Hoe reis je naar je werk?
  6. Speaker B: Ik neem meestal de fiets.

Mark the target grammar, but also mark the purpose of each turn. Replace the details and repeat the interaction without reading. A successful repetition preserves both the grammar decision and the conversational outcome.

Use one short clause with an explicit actor, finite verb and necessary detail.

B1

Connect a reason, timeline or condition while keeping the target form retrievable.

Vary emphasis and clause structure without making the listener reconstruct the message.

Four mistakes to diagnose first

  • Adding t to ik forms.
  • Keeping t in werk jij when inversion removes it for regular verbs.
  • Using a singular form with wij or ze plural.
  • Avoiding irregular verbs instead of practising a small useful set.

Four recording drills

  1. Round 1: Describe your weekday with six present-tense verbs.
  2. Round 2: Turn four statements into inverted jij questions.
  3. Round 3: Contrast one singular and plural subject per verb.
  4. Round 4: Record a one-minute routine and check only finite verb forms.

Use the present tense as the default for routines, current facts and fixed schedules. Add an explicit time phrase when the listener might confuse now, habit and future.

After recording, transcribe only the target sentence. Check the meaning, finite verb, required ending or connector, and final verb material. Select one correction and repeat once. This narrow loop produces clearer evidence than rerecording until the answer merely feels better.

  • The listener can identify the situation and requested response.
  • The target grammar changes meaning or structure correctly.
  • I complete the sentence without abandoning a required verb part.
  • I can replace one detail without losing the pattern.
  • I repeat once after naming one specific correction.

Dutch past tense for speaking

The simple past is useful for background, states and a connected narrative. You do not need every irregular form at once; begin with high-frequency verbs and keep the timeline explicit so the listener can follow the sequence.

Irregular verbs are easiest to retrieve as small useful families inside situations. Start with zijn, hebben, gaan, komen, doen, zien and krijgen before collecting rare forms with little speaking value.
