Dutch conversation skill · original speaking practice

Common Dutch speaking mistakes

The most useful speaking corrections are not always the smallest grammar corrections. Prioritize errors that change who did what, hide the time or place, remove a word ending, or leave the listener unsure what response you need.

Original lesson boundary: this page uses an independently written dialogue and phrase set. It is supplementary speaking practice, not an official exam task and not a copy of another course.

Build the interaction, not a memorized speech

Check message structure before sentence polish. A listener normally needs topic, relevant detail and purpose. If one is missing, correcting an article rarely repairs the conversation.

Then check a small set of Dutch form risks: the finite verb position, verb ending, pronoun reference and separable verb part. Correct one repeated pattern per recording rather than scanning every word.

Six Dutch phrases with a clear function

01

Het probleem is dat de verwarming niet werkt.

The problem is that the heating does not work.

02

Gisteren heb ik de verhuurder gebeld.

Yesterday I called the landlord.

03

Met 'hij' bedoel ik mijn leidinggevende.

By 'he' I mean my manager.

04

Ik kom om kwart over negen aan.

I arrive at quarter past nine.

05

Daarom wil ik een nieuwe afspraak maken.

That is why I want to make a new appointment.

06

Kunt u bevestigen welke dag mogelijk is?

Can you confirm which day is possible?

Read each Dutch phrase once, cover the English meaning and adapt one detail. Then combine two phrases inside a complete turn so the listener hears both purpose and relevant information.

Original dialogue model

  1. Speaker A: Wat is er precies gebeurd?
  2. Speaker B: Gisteren heb ik de verhuurder gebeld, omdat de verwarming niet werkt.
  3. Speaker A: Wat heeft hij gezegd?
  4. Speaker B: Met hij bedoel ik de verhuurder. Hij stuurt morgen een monteur.
  5. Speaker A: Wat wilt u nog weten?
  6. Speaker B: Ik wil graag bevestigen hoe laat de monteur komt.

Do not memorize the dialogue. Mark what each turn does—open, clarify, react, propose or confirm—then replace the setting and details while preserving those functions.

Adapt the same skill from A2 to B2

A2

make topic, time and request explicit.

B1

connect reason, consequence and solution with correct verb placement.

B2

choose concise references and repair ambiguity before the listener asks.

Four mistakes that weaken this interaction

  • Using hij, zij, het or daar when two possible references exist.
  • Giving background without stating the requested action.
  • Dropping important final consonants or separable verb parts.
  • Correcting every de or het while the core timeline remains unclear.

Four recording drills

  1. Round 1: Underline topic, detail and request in a transcript of your answer.
  2. Round 2: Replace every vague pronoun with its intended noun, then restore only clear pronouns.
  3. Round 3: Record four sentences beginning with a time expression and check the verb.
  4. Round 4: Choose one repeated error and compare it across three attempts.

Use an intelligibility hierarchy: first meaning and response, then sentence structure, then recurring word forms, and only then minor accent preferences. This prevents correction from becoming a list with no effect on communication.

  • The listener can identify my purpose within two sentences.
  • I include the detail needed for a useful response.
  • I react to the previous turn instead of delivering an unrelated script.
  • My final turn requests, confirms or closes something clearly.
  • I repeat once after naming one specific improvement.

Frequently asked questions

Should I memorize all six phrases?

No. Learn what each phrase does, then change the person, time, place, reason or requested action. Flexible retrieval matters more than reproducing this page.

Can I use this for an exam?

You can use the speaking method as supplementary practice. For current format, timing, scoring and official examples, use the responsible official exam organization.

Does the web page record my voice?

No. The public page displays material only. Use a local recorder, the iPhone app or a teacher workflow if you want to review audio.
