Make a polite request in Dutch
Politeness does not require hiding the request. Name the action, use kunt u or zou je where appropriate, add only the reason the listener needs and confirm timing or conditions.
Build the interaction, not a memorized speech
Choose u for formal service or unfamiliar adult contexts and je where the relationship permits it. The modal form softens the request, but tone and a realistic demand matter too.
If the listener cannot meet the first request, offer a smaller alternative. End by confirming what was accepted rather than interpreting misschien as a firm agreement.

Kunt u mij hiermee helpen?
Could you help me with this?
Zou je het raam kunnen sluiten?
Could you close the window?
Ik vraag dit omdat de ruimte erg koud is.
I ask because the room is very cold.
Is het mogelijk om vóór vrijdag te reageren?
Is it possible to respond before Friday?
Als dat niet lukt, is maandag ook goed.
If that does not work, Monday is also fine.

Read each Dutch phrase once, cover the English meaning and adapt one detail. Then combine two phrases inside a complete turn so the listener hears both purpose and relevant information.

- Speaker A: Kunt u mijn afspraak naar vrijdag verplaatsen?
- Speaker B: Vrijdag zit helaas vol.
- Speaker A: Is maandagochtend dan mogelijk?
- Speaker B: Ja, om kwart over tien.
- Speaker A: Dat is goed. Kunt u de nieuwe tijd per e-mail bevestigen?
- Speaker B: Natuurlijk, dat doe ik vanmiddag.
Do not memorize the dialogue. Mark what each turn does—open, clarify, react, propose or confirm—then replace the setting and details while preserving those functions.

Four mistakes that weaken this interaction
- Giving several minutes of background before stating the request.
- Using je in a context where u is expected without noticing the relationship.
- Calling an unrealistic demand polite only because it uses zou.
- Ending without knowing whether the listener actually agreed.
Four recording drills
- Round 1: Make the same request to a friend, colleague and service employee.
- Round 2: Reduce a long explanation to one relevant reason.
- Round 3: Practise first option, refusal and alternative.
- Round 4: Close four requests by confirming action and time.
Politeness conventions vary across organizations and relationships. Observe how the other person addresses you and adapt without treating one phrase as universally correct.
- The listener can identify my purpose within two sentences.
- I include the detail needed for a useful response.
- I react to the previous turn instead of delivering an unrelated script.
- My final turn requests, confirms or closes something clearly.
- I repeat once after naming one specific improvement.
