Dutch speaking strategies

A speaking strategy is a decision that helps you finish a meaningful message under limited time. Plan functions rather than sentences: answer, reason, detail and next step. Keep repair language ready and evaluate one feature after recording.

Original lesson boundary: this page uses an independently written dialogue and phrase set. It is supplementary speaking practice, not an official exam task and not a copy of another course.

Build the interaction, not a memorized speech

During preparation, write three content words rather than a complete script. Assign each word a function so you can rebuild the answer even if the exact sentence changes.

During review, ignore harmless variation and find the first point where meaning or structure weakened. Repeat the task once with one named change; endless rerecording makes it hard to know what helped.

Six Dutch phrases with a clear function

01

Eerst geef ik kort antwoord.

First I will answer briefly.

02

De belangrijkste reden is…

The main reason is…

03

Een concreet voorbeeld daarvan is…

A concrete example of that is…

04

Ik weet het woord niet, maar ik kan het omschrijven.

I do not know the word, but I can describe it.

05

Laat ik teruggaan naar de vraag.

Let me return to the question.

06

Kortom, mijn voorstel is…

In short, my proposal is…

Read each Dutch phrase once, cover the English meaning and adapt one detail. Then combine two phrases inside a complete turn so the listener hears both purpose and relevant information.

Original dialogue model

  1. Speaker A: Wat zou je in deze situatie doen?
  2. Speaker B: Eerst geef ik kort antwoord: ik zou de afspraak verplaatsen.
  3. Speaker A: Waarom?
  4. Speaker B: De belangrijkste reden is dat ik anders te laat kom. Een concreet alternatief is vrijdag om tien uur.
  5. Speaker A: En als vrijdag niet kan?
  6. Speaker B: Dan vraag ik naar maandag. Kortom, ik bied twee duidelijke opties.

Do not memorize the dialogue. Mark what each turn does—open, clarify, react, propose or confirm—then replace the setting and details while preserving those functions.

Adapt the same skill from A2 to B2

A2

plan answer, reason and one request.

B1

add consequence, alternative and explicit conclusion.

B2

select evidence, acknowledge a condition and control the time without sounding scripted.

Four mistakes that weaken this interaction

  • Writing full sentences and trying to recall them word for word.
  • Using connectors without a logical relationship.
  • Reviewing pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and content simultaneously.
  • Repeating ten times without naming the intended improvement.

Four recording drills

  1. Round 1: Turn five prompts into three-keyword function plans.
  2. Round 2: Practise a missing-word description without stopping the answer.
  3. Round 3: Record once, diagnose the first meaning failure and repeat once.
  4. Round 4: Answer the same prompt in thirty, sixty and ninety seconds.

Strategies support performance but do not replace language knowledge or official exam information. Combine them with current official examples for your route and with original speaking practice.

  • The listener can identify my purpose within two sentences.
  • I include the detail needed for a useful response.
  • I react to the previous turn instead of delivering an unrelated script.
  • My final turn requests, confirms or closes something clearly.
  • I repeat once after naming one specific improvement.

Frequently asked questions

Should I memorize all six phrases?

No. Learn what each phrase does, then change the person, time, place, reason or requested action. Flexible retrieval matters more than reproducing this page.

Can I use this for an exam?

You can use the speaking method as supplementary practice. For current format, timing, scoring and official examples, use the responsible official exam organization.

Does the web page record my voice?

No. The public page displays material only. Use a local recorder, the iPhone app or a teacher workflow if you want to review audio.
